Moonee Ponds Residence: Where Materiality and Refinement Collide

Designed by Architecton Co-Founder and Director Nick Lukas as a forever home for his family, the Moonee Ponds residence is a combination of bold architecture, uncomplicated materials and refined elegance of the interior fittings. All that, seamlessly enveloping all creature comforts a family of four might need.

The profoundly personal mark on this design comes through the materiality of the project, the rigorous commitment to the design intent – and the intentional dialogue between the interiors and the exteriors. The house balances straight lines, simple forms and raw materials such as concrete, steel and glass with refined and elaborated interiors.

The master suite bathroom is the perfect expression of the masterful juxtaposition of the organic rawness and elegant refinement the design of the house is anchored within, with the materiality of the project coming to life through a variety of visual and tactile textures. Selected materials celebrate their true form, without appearing to be something else – amplifying the layered simplicity of the space further.

While the children’s bathrooms feature dark, iridescent and character-rich porcelain tiles, the master ensuite is all about the cool, grey tones and soft brown markings of Elba stone. The natural stone has been incorporated in three different textures along the floor, the walls and the double vanity. The choice of different textures of the same stone provides visual continuity and an exquisite background to simple and inherently elegant white matt bathware and brushed chrome tapware. The back wall featuring a split face tile adds depth and texture in a dramatic play of shade and natural light coming off the window to the side.

A glass, frameless shower screen separates the shower and bath area from the vanity without obstructing the flow of the bathroom. It enhances the sense of cohesion and enables the space to capitalise on the available natural light, while its sleek form and subtle presence further compound the materiality of the space.

Considered and timeless, the products were carefully selected both for their natural aesthetic appeal but also for their lasting qualities that certainly match the intent of this forever home. The choice of raw, organic and natural materials, paired with detailed and timeless sophistication make Moonee Ponds residence a striking, timeless design – and its main bathroom a true staple of that design intent.
